Especially when they're the ones ranked lowest in your class (your D and F students). It always seems like if a student is stuck in a rut, it's that much harder to get out!! Unfortunately I don't have any real suggestions here as this is my first year teaching and a few weeks ago was the first time I encountered this problem. While I'm teaching my middle school class though, I can't help but think to myself, 'if only they'd realize how important education is during their youth!' they might just take school a bit more seriously at a young age. This unfortunately never works though, priorities just aren't the same when you're in middle or high school... Motivating students is always tough.
